Who needs it! What is so wrong with a Civil Union that gives gays who love each other all the same rights afforded to straight people, just without the fancy piece of paper? Seriously. Why are gay people so fired up about getting married? I understand that, for some, it’s about “the principle.” But that’s the same bullshit I hear spewing from Fred Phelps and the “jesus Hates Fags” Right, most of whom watch the news about once every four years, and even then only to find out which presidential candidate hates gays more.
Is it barbarically insensitive to request that Clinton, Obama, and Edwards stand up right now and declare that they are opposed to gay marriage? Think about what that will accomplish? It will totally eliminate the “automatic bigot vote” that every Republican candidate since Ronald Reagan has known he could count on. Without a “pro-gay marriage” candidate, the Religious Right will stay in their time capsules on election day.
Keeping bigots who vote for the wrong reasons out of voting booths ultimately increases the proportion of voters who are informed, responsible, and actually deserve a say in who runs the country. In a country where “gay marriage” was depoliticized, elected presidents (whether they ended up being Republican or Democrat) could sign legislation that was supportive of gay rights without worrying about the “jesus Hates Fags” Right emerging from their caves in droves to sabotage the next election.
Can you imagine how much better off our country and the world would be right now if Al Gore hadn’t plugged gay marriage in ’00?
