We knew they’d do it eventually. It was only a matter of time before conservatives played the “Osama ≈ Obama” card. I mean, what the hell–their names kinda rhyme, right? So why not go for it? If Republicans continuously remind people of this phonetic coincidence, maybe everyone will start seeing Barack Obama as an al-Qaeda mastermind.
The GOP has been eying this tacky maneuver for quite awhile. I’m surprised they held out as long as they did. But like a dog drooling over a milk bone, Mitt Romney inevitably found the free shot too enticing not to take. Today Romney posed for a snapshot with a New Hampshire woman who was brandishing a sign that read: “No to Osama, Obama, and Chelsea’s Moma.”
Since the Republican candidate from Massachusetts had not himself painted the handmade sign, Romney apparently saw nothing wrong with his standing next to it grinning like a goofy dip-shit. In fact, when a critic inquired as to what the hell he was thinking, Romney recommended that the critic “lighten up.”
Of course, anyone whose lived in the United States for the past five years might argue that conservative cowboys, Romney among them, have long since rejected any possibility of lightening up. Rather the Republican White House frightens Americans with exaggerated and sometimes often deliberately fabricated “news” about terrorist threats. As President Bush reminds us incessantly, the “war on terror” is a fundamental struggle between good and evil. The “evildoers” hate our freedom–they want to kill us, so therefore we must first kill all of them!
Having worked hard to establish this He-Man-like rhetoric, Republicans can now link one of their most formidable political opponents to Osama bin Laden, who once again reigns as the token figurehead for evil and terror now that Saddam Hussein has been executed. But Romney’s folly brings down political smear campaigns to an entirely new level. The GOP is doing more this time than simply questioning a man’s commitment and his honesty (a la their 2004 Swift Boat bullshit); the message Americans got today was that, from Romney’s perspective, Barack Obama may as well be a terrorist.
Perhaps this mindless gimmick will help Romney’s flailing campaign to find its second wind. I doubt it, though, as the “Jesus Hates Fags” Right finds Mormonism’s polygamous butchering of Christian values at least as unsettling as the way Barack spells his last name.
